Kindergarten: Lines

It might not look like much, however, Kindergarten's first art project is the most important. They are learning how to draw lines, identify lines, look at and describe art, participate in group instruction, and how to use glue sticks and scissors. Fine motor skills are being developed and art room safety is being learned. Day 2 of this project looks like this....

First Grade Still Life

After exploring the colors, shapes and objects found in a Paul Cezanne still life of fruit on a table, First grade students discussed their ideas for "Why do artists draw or paint a still life?". Their answers always inspire me. "To practice and become better artists.", "because it won't move", "maybe, these are things the artist likes", etc. First, children practiced observational drawing with toys. They discovered that in Kindergarten they had already learned how to draw everything needed to draw from life: lines and shapes!

After gaining their interest with drawing toys, I brought in these beautiful flowers in hopes that the color might keep their interest ....

It worked:

Stay tuned for the next lesson in this project... Color!

Hallway Display for K to 4

For the second year, each student had the opportunity to create a small project that became a part of a school-wide hallway display. This year each student traced his/ her hand, filled it with lines and colored it according to a color scheme that is part of that grade's art curriculum.

Thanks to Pinterest and http://kickinitwithclass.blogspot.com/2013/09/classroom-doors-be-all-you-can-picture.html for the idea!

Back To School Night!

Thank you to so many parents that expressed an interest in Artsonia.com and the Hilltop Art Room blog!

A bit about the blog: This is where I'll try to post images and information about the projects as they are happening, from introduction to planning to completed projects. I will never post a student's name or face. I found last year, that images of students' hands working, bulletin boards, and finished works, worked very well to illustrate how we get work accomplished in the art room.

Artsonia.com:  This is where I will publish student artwork as it is completed throughout the year. Using the iPad that the Home & School purchased with Campbell's labels for Education, I am able to photograph and upload artwork while students are sharing their finished work with the class. Our artsonia gallery has been very popular and has been a successful way for our students to share their work with extended family.

Check out our current gallery at: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=47428

Check back soon for images of our school-wide bulletin boards AND all of the great first projects that are underway.
